Waterloo sunset
Started my application to the London School of Economics and Political Science today. I don’t know if I’ll get in, but we’ll see — there’s no harm in trying. Of course, I’m going to miss Columbia, but I’ll be back senior year.
I love Columbia, and I am happy to admit that Columbia — this iron gated institution — has become a second home to...

Love-hate relationship
…with the internet.
It’s so easy to misinterpret things on the internet. I speak on behalf of all the bloggers who have been called out by snide comments and remarks. The internet has opened up a whole new level of openness but it’s, oh, so easy to forget that there are real people behind these interfaces.
Funny how the internet becomes a part of your being.

Nobody realizes that some people expend tremendous energy merely to be normal.

Forget being normal. Expend that energy into creativity.

10:40pm thoughts
I have decided that I am definitely going to study abroad the spring semester of my junior year. After having brunch with a friend who works at a well-known fashion magazine in Australia, I would like to expand my world view. She has interned and studied all over the place, from the Sorbonne to New York City. And, as an editor at another fashion magazine mentioned to me, you don’t have many...

How To Be A 20-Something →
jessicachu:
Be really attractive. Your acne is gone, your face has matured without having wrinkles and everything on your body is lifted naturally. Eat bagels seven days a week, binge-drink and do drugs: you’ll still look like a babe. When you turn thirty, it’ll become a different story but that’s, like, not for a really long time.
Reestablish a relationship with your parents. You don’t...

– Margaret Mead, anthropologist and Barnard/Columbia graduate/faculty member
This quotation sums up why I am studying sociocultural anthropology at Columbia.

I'm harsh, but this is what I truly believe
I’m kind of an awful person for thinking this, but I don’t take pity on people who can’t commit to activities they’re committed to because they need to study or finish their homework.
They should just not sleep.
Anyway, as college students, we should learn to take responsibility for our, well, responsibilities, and understand that when we commit to a task, we’re not...

Three reasons why I sometimes think I'm a joke
I wore my comfortable Marc by Marc Jacobs flats this morning to run errands, but when I took them off, my left foot was covered in blood. Ironically, right after I cleaned my foot, I went to go pick up a pair of United Nude pumps. This is about a month after I sprained my foot after wearing five-inch heels on College Walk. Also, I think my left foot is bigger than my right foot.
I was really...

Asian mothers: This is what you do to us
My friend: I need to lose 10 pounds by the 21st.
Me: Wait, why? Are you going to the beach for break?
My friend: No. I'm going home to see my mum.

5 Columbia students arrested for drug bust →
This happened this morning and it’s been all over the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Twitter, etc.
Everyone seems to have something to say about it, whether or not they go to Columbia.
It got me thinking about privilege. And ethics. And the law.
I don’t like how the entire undercover operation was called “Operation Ivy League.” What does being in the Ivy League...

In perspective
Whenever I get tired and I am about to complain about having so much work, I remember how Joe Zee, creative director of ELLE, gets up around 5am almost every morning. I remember how all of my bosses at my magazine internships arrive at work before their own bosses and are still busy at work when their bosses leave. I think about how Vera Wang worked hard for years as a fashion editor at VOGUE...

We are young, we are sort of free, and we are all just starting to understand...
– Valeriya Safronova, Columbia Daily Spectator
I used to wonder why my beautiful, smart, accomplished, confident, fun, and witty friends would seem to become completely different people under the influence of love. I didn’t think I’d find the answer in a column in my school newspaper....

12.1
With one month of the year left to spare and 24 more days until my 20th birthday, I’ve got to admit that being 19 has been pretty miserable.
Heh. Just kidding.
At the end of every year, I would usually evaluate the year based on what I achieved and what I didn’t achieve. I would make long lists, every single bullet point explaining a perfect score on an exam, an injury, or another...
