Last night, my mother brought up marriage again and mentioned in passing something about a “good husband.”
(When she says “good husband,” she means a very successful guy who makes a lot of money. And is Christian. But above all, he has to make a lot of money. Of course, she assumes that there would be a guy out there who, in spite of his flaming success, isn’t a total a dick with an inflamed ego).
And I bitterly told her, “There is no good husband, because there is not such thing as a good man. I am not going to marry.” I was half joking, and half not. Have I mentioned already that I have little faith in marriage? My parents are happily married and all, but that’s because my dad is actually from another planet.
“You don’t have to,” My mom said, much to my surprise. “It’s better not to marry rather than live with somebody you do not love.”
I asked her why she was suddenly so compliant with my anti-marriage views now.
“Because the world is changing,” She responded with resignation.
